At Colorado Springs Utilities, we focus our attention on the basics – our four core services of electricity, natural gas, water and wastewater. The result: a more efficient community-owned utility. The citizens of Colorado Springs continue to reap the benefits of community ownership – enjoying competitive prices, exceptional hometown service, responsible environmental practices and a voice in how their utility operates. While generating reliable energy and delivering water to residents are part of the responsibilities associated with operating an utility, we believe it goes further than that. Customer satisfaction comes from each employee and the passion with which we serve our customers and community. Mission To provide safe, reliable, competitively-priced electric, natural gas, water and wastewater services to the citizen owners and customers of Colorado Springs Utilities. Vision Colorado Springs Utilities is a treasured community asset. We are welcome partners, well-known for responsible and dependable service. We are vital to the future of our region. Community ownership Colorado Springs Utilities is a municipal enterprise of the City of Colorado Springs. Our governing board is called the Utilities Board, which is comprised of the members of City Council. Under this structure, our CEO manages our day-to-day business while the Utilities Board sets overall policies and goals. Since we are a municipal enterprise, we are not tax supported. Our costs are covered by ratepayer dollars, and as a non-profit entity, each and every one of those customer dollars are reinvested back into our operations. Our environment is unique in that we are one of less than 10 four-service municipal utility organizations in the country. History Our services today are assured thanks to early Colorado Springs citizens. These visionaries recognized that owning their own utility would provide a vital step for the city to thrive. In need of a safe, reliable water supply, Colorado Springs developed a municipal water system in 1878, and 10 years later established its own wastewater system. Citizens voted in 1924 to acquire the electric and natural gas systems after becoming dissatisfied with private utility practices and poor service. In 1925, the city became the sole owner and operator of all public utilities: electricity, natural gas, water and wastewater services. The wisdom and foresight of those early citizens still benefit the community today, helping to ensure exceptional service at fair rates. Locally controlled and community-owned, Colorado Springs Utilities continues to be a treasured community asset, a utility the citizens of Colorado Springs are proud to call their own. |
