Salary range:  $21.21 - $34.13 per hour

Responsibilities and Duties:

This position is in our Energy Services Division and is primarily responsible for providing journey level experience to the following:

  • Installing underground or overhead electrical lines by installing conduit, setting poles, pulling wire and setting meters;
  • Constructing, maintaining and testing electrical distribution and transmission systems and related equipment;
  • Switching or rerouting electrical systems using proper sequencing and connections;
  • Assuring compliance with safety standards and work practices;
  • Operating line construction vehicles and equipment including wirepulling equipment, bucket trucks, boom trucks,  easement equipment, hydraulic, pneumatic and various hand tools;
  • Preparing materials for line construction and charging materials to appropriate job;
  • Assisting in training Line Technician apprentices.

These positions are subject to emergency response call out 24/7 including holidays and weekends and rotational standby.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Competencies:

  • Operating equipment including backhoes, thermoscan cameras, trenchers and hand tools;
  • Reading maps, interpreting specifications, electrical one lines (circuits) and blueprints;
  • Troubleshooting electrical systems;
  • Performing physical aspects of line construction and maintenance;
  • Applying safety standards in completing work assignments;
  • Climbing poles;
  • Installing and maintaining electrical distribution and transmission systems;
  • Communication both written and verbal, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction;
  • Electrical systems principles, voltage requirements, equipment, installation and maintenance;
  • Construction standards, regulations and industry standards and materials;
  • Able to adjust to multiple and changing priorities, remaining flexible and open;
  • Operates honestly and ethically;
  • Able to build trust;

Physical Requirements:

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, dusts, poor ventilation, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions and intense noises.   Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects.

Typical Licensing Requirements (positions in this class typically require):
Commercial Driver’s License;
Medical Examination Certification;
First Aide Certification;
CPR Certification;
Flagger Certification.

Relevant Background:

The successful candidate will have completed an accredited apprenticeship program and have experience working as a journey level Power Lineman in overhead/underground electric distribution.  A pre-employment physical will be required upon hire.   Incumbent must have, or be able to obtain and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License and a valid Colorado Driver’s License and residence within a 30 mile radius of the East Service Center facility is desired.

An Employee hired into this Nonexempt position is eligible to participate in Colorado Springs Utilities Pay at Risk program.  Employees in this classification may receive a performance pay award based on a percentage of salary up to 11%, dependent upon the successful completion of a predefined performance plan.

New employees hired prior to July 1, 2008 are eligible for a prorated award for the 2008 calendar year.  Employees hired on or after July 1 may participate during the 2009 calendar year.
