Colorado Springs Utilities generates most of the electricity for the community at its local plants. A variety of fuel sources including coal, natural gas and hydroelectric allows the community-owned utility to adjust to market conditions to keep costs low. Springs Utilities buys from a variety of suppliers year-round to get the best prices on natural gas. These cost-saving measures help keep rates stable for customers.

Energy bills are one of the many items compared in the 2007 Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER) study, formerly known as the ACCRA Cost of Living report.  Monthly bill amounts are based on typical year-round energy use for each city and rates in effect in first quarter 2007. C2ER, a nonprofit research group based in Arlington, VA reports quarterly cost of living figures for nearly 300 cities in the United States.
