Utilities-related construction material costs soar by triple digits An unprecedented mix of $1.7 billion in capital needs over the next five years and a triple digit, nationwide rise in costs for utility-related construction materials is adding to Colorado Springs Utilities’ budget challenges for 2008 and beyond. For example, copper increased 112 percent from 2003-2005, and an additional 123 percent between 2005 and 2007. Market costs for lead, nickel, aluminum, electrical connectors and transformers rose by double and triple digits over the same time period. Interview and photo opportunity: Interviews are available with a Springs Utilities’ materials manager on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 10:30 a.m. at our supply and materials yard at the Leon Young Service Center, 1521 Hancock Expressway. Oct. 21-27 is Winter Weather Preparedness Week… Masts: more than meets the eye In the aftermath of the October 2006 blizzard, damage to customer-owned masts prevented Colorado Springs Utilities from restoring power to many customers. Masts are found on the outside of homes that receive power from overhead electric lines, and look like a metal pipe or tube exiting electric meters. Masts are the responsibility of the customer, so homeowners must call a licensed electrician for repairs. Interview and photo opportunity: Interviews are available with a Springs Utilities spokesperson on Friday, Oct. 26, 1:30 p.m. in an alley next to 415 E. Columbia Street (2 blocks east of Nevada Ave., off of Wahsatch Avenue). Tips to keep old man winter out of your home In less than a weekend, most homes can be weatherized to save energy this winter.
