Today, Springs Utilities earns award for protecting the environment through its residential new construction program

Colorado Springs, CO – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized Colorado Springs Utilities with a 2008 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year award for its outstanding contributions to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The award recognizes excellence in delivering information and services to its customers to increase energy efficiency. Springs Utilities’ accomplishments will be recognized at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. on April 1, 2008.

Springs Utilities, a long standing ENERGY STAR partner, is being honored for their work to boost market share of ENERGY STAR qualified new homes through comprehensive outreach, education, and marketing programs. Colorado Springs Utilities' Builder Incentive Program provides an incentive for local builders to create new homes that are at least 15 percent more efficient than code requires.

Last year alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved $16 billion on their energy bills and reduced greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to those of 27 million vehicles.

“Springs Utilities understands the value and benefits of energy efficiency for both our organization and our customers,” said Jeff Rath, Springs Utilities conservation specialist. “We are proud to continue our partnership with ENERGY STAR and plan to educate our customers about how the use of ENERGY STAR products and services can save energy and money.”

The Excellence in ENERGY STAR Program Delivery Awards are given to a variety of organizations to recognize their efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce pollution, resulting in significant cost savings. Award winners are selected from more than 9,000 organizations that participate in the ENERGY STAR program.

“Partners such as Springs Utilities are raising the bar for energy efficiency, teaching customers that their decisions can make a difference,” said Robert J. Meyers, principal deputy assistant administrator for EPA's Office of Air & Radiation. “Springs Utilities is doing an excellent job working with ENERGY STAR to transform the market for energy-efficient products, services, homes and programs that help Americans save money and protect our environment.”

About Springs Utilities
At Colorado Springs Utilities, we focus our attention on the basics - our four core services of electricity, natural gas, water and wastewater, serving more than 600,000 metered accounts. Environmental stewardship has been an integral part of our business for decades. We believe being environmentally focussed goes beyond complying with regulations. It means responsibly managing our operations in a way that helps protect our air, water, land and natural resources now and for future generations.

Our Builder Incentive Program is designed to encourage Colorado Springs homebuilders to qualify their homes under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) ENERGY STAR New Homes program. With the help of some local ENERGY STAR builders, we have been able to make this program a success.
