Mayor, City Council on hand to provide free CFLs

Colorado Springs Utilities invites customers and community members alike to get down to earth at its second annual Earth Day Celebration Saturday April 19, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Conservation and Environmental Center, 2855 Mesa Road.

Also, Springs Utilities and Wal-Mart have partnered to provide free compact fluorescent lamps to attendees. Wal-Mart donated 5,000 CFLs to the community as part of the partnership. Mayor Lionel Rivera and City Council members will be at the event from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. to hand out CFLs while supplies last.

“Wal-Mart is proud to be partnering with Colorado Springs Utilities on this terrific event,” says Josh Phair, senior manager of public affairs for Wal-Mart. “Earth Day is a great opportunity to show customers that small steps like changing a light bulb can make a big difference.”

Event goers will learn about:

  • Xeriscape™ techniques
  • solar and wind power technologies
  • raptor and wildlife protection
  • ENERGY STAR home improvement
  • hybrid vehicles

Kids will have fun painting their own flower pots, learning about conservation with “Horton Hears a Who” activity books and meeting Springs Utilities’ Ollie the Otter water conservation mascot.

The day’s schedule also features the following workshops:

  • 9 a.m.: Introduction to Xeriscape™
  • 10 a.m.: Wildlife and raptor presentation
  • 11 a.m.: Energy- and water-efficiency workshop
  • Xeriscape Garden tours available all day

Free CFLs at local Wal-Mart Stores

Also on April 19, free CFLs will be available at local Wal-Mart Stores from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Participating locations are E. Platte and Chelton, 8th Street, Powers and Woodmen, Powers and Palmer Park, and Briargate.
