| As a community-owned utility, we believe that supporting the community helps us to be a better utility provider. Our employees are committed to not only providing excellent utilities service, but to giving back to the community in many ways. Volunteering for Our Community Our employees made significant donations of their personal time in 2007, again breaking all their previous volunteer records: - Over 884 Springs Utilities employees, and their friends and families, volunteered 7,250 hours on 125 community projects.
- Employees volunteered another 7,000 hours to community organizations as troop leaders, coaches, committee members, or as non-profit board members.
- The President’s Volunteer Service Award was presented to 26 Springs Utilities’ employees for donating over 100 hours in 2006 to nonprofit organizations.
- Employees volunteered over 422 hours at our local food bank.
- During the holidays, employees donated over 480 gifts to senior citizens and filled another 430 stockings with toys for less fortunate children in our community.
- Colorado Springs Utilities refurbished and donated about 180 used computers to local non-profits and educational institutions saving our land fill and helping organizations that help our citizens.
Neighbors Helping Neighbors in need with utility bill assistance The Project COPE(Citizens’ Option to Provide Energy) Program helped customers experiencing emergency situations with utilities payments. - During 2007, 3,165 households received $655,000 to help pay for their utilities.
Safety and Efficiency Education for Our Customers We provided education to our community about utilities safety, the water cycle, the environment and how to use resources wisely. - Over 11,300 adults and children learned about electricity and natural gas safety through our presentations to local schools and organizations in 2007.
- Over 3,000 school children used educational kits developed by Springs Utilities to learn about renewable energy, energy efficiency and water conservation.
- Springs Utilities employees made presentations, talked to customers and made appearances at local events to share information on energy efficiency, water conservation and safety with over 16,000 citizens.
Community Commitment In 2007, Colorado Springs Utilities received national and international recognition for its community programs. Springs Utilities was a finalist for: - The Platts Global Energy Award in Community Development for our support of affordable housing.
- The Wildlife Habitat Council’s Community Partner of the Year Award for our partnership on a project for Fort Carson Army Base.
