Your natural gas meter is a tool for measuring the amount, in cubic feet, of natural gas you use in a given month. Your meter measures the natural gas by counting the filling and emptying of the compartments inside the meter. Though meters can vary in size and shape, they all record natural gas use in the same basic way.

Reading Your Meter
A natural gas meter is not hard to read. The dials that record the amount of gas used are grouped together in a row of four. Each dial represents a single number in the reading. Begin with the dial on the left.

Dial A reads 6: The pointer is between 6 and 7, so you record the smaller number, 6.

Dial B reads 1: The pointer is between 1 and 2, so you record the smaller number, 1.

Dial C reads 2: The pointer is between 2 and 3, so you record the smaller number, 2.

Dial D reads 2: The pointer is between 2 and 3, so you record the smaller number, 2.

The final reading, from left to right, is 6122 ccf (hundred cubic feet).

Helpful Tips

  • Read the meter dials from left to right, writing down the numbers in the same order.
  • If the hand points between two numbers, use the lower number. When it points between 9 and 0, always read it as 9.
  • When the hand seems to be directly on a number, look at the dial to the right. If the hand on that dial is on or just past 0, write down the number the hand is pointing toward on the dial you are reading. If the hand on the dial to the right has not reached 0, write down the smaller number on the dial you are reading.

Meter Tampering
Tampering with a natural gas meter to make it show less consumption, or bypassing the meter entirely, is illegal and dangerous. When someone uses natural gas without paying for it, others pay more. Call 448-4800 if you know of anyone tampering with a natural gas meter.
