  • Clean your refrigerator and freezer coils once a year.
  • Clean your clothes dryer lint filter after each load to help the dryer work more efficiently. Heat is not blocked and distributed more evenly when the filter has been cleaned.
  • Use a drying rack or a clothesline for drying items when appropriate. A drying rack is a free way to dry clothes. It may even keep them from shrinking, something a dryer will not do.
  • Replace worn gaskets on your refrigerator.
  • Run full loads when washing dishes and laundry.
  • Insulate hot water heaters to reduce heat loss.
  • Cook with a microwave, when possible; it's cheaper and does not generate as much heat as a stove.
  • Open the oven door no more than absolutely necessary when cooking or baking. Each time an oven door is opened, the oven loses about 20 percent of its heat.
  • Plan meals so you'll cook and bake several items at once. Preheat as little as possible.
  • Avoid unnecessary appliance use during the day and turn off lights, appliances and electronics when not in use.
  • Set refrigerators and freezers at warmest setting.
  • Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120 degrees.
