Colorado Springs' source water is at low risk due to the majority of our source water being collected along the Continental Divide as a result of snow melt. We have first use of this water. The EPA does not currently require testing of pharmaceuticals in drinking water. Analytical methodology is in its infancy; and we are unaware of any published standardized method for pharmaceutical testing. Colorado Springs Utilities Industrial Pretreatment laboratory section is working with the medical community on proper disposal of pharmaceuticals. Research is on-going, and many studies are currently being reported from research foundations. Two such studies are from AWWARF (AWWA Research Foundation): o Removal of Endocrine Distrupting Chemicals (EDCs) and Pharmaceuticals in Drinking and Reuse Treatment Processes; o Toxicological Relevance of Endocrine Disruptors and Pharmaceuticals in Drinking Water (release pending).
We will continue to update our water quality report and our strategies concerning this issue. |
