The existing character of your landscape and its surroundings influence and may even determine much of your landscape design - the slopes and level areas, existing soil and vegetation, your site's individual climate and other factors which are unique to your site and surroundings. Each factor is important to consider when thinking about what will work in your landscape.

Making a visual and physical analysis of your site and surroundings will give you a feel for the elements that make up your property. A systematic evaluation of your site's positive and negative aspects will help you create a landscape that truly fits your needs and your yard.

Below are two tools to use in your evaluation.

  1. A Panoramic Photo  of your landscape is a valuable tool for evaluating your new or existing landscape. You can document your progress for encouragement, and it serves as a tool to visualize your options for changing or adding to your landscape.
  2. The Site Analysis Inventory is a variety of questions about your existing landscape. It can help you identify common landscape issues.
