Use this calendar to keep up with suggested monthly maintenance of your landscape.

January
Trees and Shrubs
  • Remove heavy snow from limbs.
  • Water newly planted trees and shrubs once. Most established trees do not need extra water.
  • Look for bare spots in your garden that could benefit from the addition of trees or shrubs in early spring.
Lawn Care
  • Winter water once or twice (depending on weather).
General Garden
  • Winter water once or twice (depending on weather).
  • Start looking over seed catalogs and making your seed lists, including veggies.

  • Winter water newly planted trees and shrubs once or twice (depending on weather).

Lawn Care

  • Winter water once or twice (depending on weather).
General Garden
  • Winter water once or twice (depending on weather).
  • Start cleaning up leaves and other yard debris.
  • Make a checklist of tools - clean,sharpen,replace,add, etc.
  • Keep dreaming.

March
Trees and Shrubs

  • Winter water newly planted trees and shrubs once or twice (depending on weather).
  • Plant bare-root trees or shrubs.
Lawn Care
  • Winter water once or twice (depending on weather).
General Garden
  • Winter water once or twice (depending on weather).
  • Reapply any mulch that may have thinned to avoid early thawing/blooming.
  • Start seeds indoors.

April
Trees and Shrubs

  • Continue planting bare-root material.
  • Remove wrap from trees.
Lawn Care
  • Core aerate the lawn areas.
  • Fertilize the lawn.
  • Over-seed thin areas in the turf.
  • Begin to mow weekly.
  • Water as needed, following local watering guidelines and restrictions.
General Garden
  • Water as needed.
  • Continue clean-up.
  • Dig or rototill organic material into flower and vegetable beds.
  • Prune late-blooming perennials.
  • Plant cool season crops, such as spinach, peas, carrots, etc.

May
Trees and Shrubs

  • Finish bare-root plantings by mid-May.
  • Prune early flowering shrubs, such as lilacs and forsythia, after blooms have faded.
  • Plant potted or balled-and-burlapped trees and shrubs. Be sure to note mature height and spread and place appropriately in your landscape.
Lawn Care
  • Fertilize.
  • Water as needed, following local watering guidelines and restrictions.
  • Mow weekly.
General Garden
  • Plant annuals after the danger of frost has passed.
  • Remove foliage from spring-blooming bulbs after leaves have completely died back.
  • Fertilize where appropriate.
  • Divide plants (mostly mid to late bloomers).

June
Trees and Shrubs

  • Prune evergreens, if needed.
  • Water as needed.
Lawn Care
  • Fertilize.
  • Water as needed, following local watering guidelines and restrictions.
  • Mow weekly to a height of 2.5 to 3 inches to ward off disease and insect problems.
General Garden
  • Set out heat-loving veggies like tomatoes and peppers when night time temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees.
  • Weed flower and vegetable gardens on a regular basis.
  • Deadhead or pinch back annual flowers to keep them bushy and full of blooms.
  • Monitor plants for early signs of disease or pest infestation.
  • Keep planting - this is still a good time to plant many perennials.
  • Clean up and divide early bloomers, such as Primroses (Primula) and Bleeding Heart (Dicentra).

  • Mow weekly to a height of 2.5 to 3 inches.

  • Keep deadheading.
  • Keep weeding.

  • Fertilize.
  • Water as needed, following local watering guidelines and restrictions.
  • Mow weekly to a height of 2.5 to 3 inches.
General Garden
  • Sow cool-season crops for fall harvest.
  • Keep deadheading.
  • Keep weeding.
  • Start cutting back on watering.
  • Divide early summer bloomers.
  • Do not fertilize after August 15.

September

  • Water as needed.
Lawn Care
  • Core aerate the lawn areas.
  • Over-seed or plant new seed in thin areas.
  • Water as needed, following local watering guidelines and restrictions.
  • Mow weekly.
General Garden
  • Broadcast some perennial seeds, such as blue fax and penstemon, for next summer's blooms.
  • Harvest corn, peppers, tomatoes before frost.
  • Finish dividing plants.
  • Cut back perennials, except those that offer winter interest.

October

  • Apply tree wrap to sensitive or very small trees.
Lawn Care
  • Fertilize.
  • Turn off and drain sprinkler system, but do keep a hose handy.
  • Winter water once or twice (depending on weather).
  • Mow weekly or as needed.
General Garden
  • Finish cutting back perennials that don't contribute to winter interest.
  • Dig up tender bulbs like dahlias and gladioli and store for next season.
  • Add mulch where needed.
  • Put a mound of mulch around roses after first hard frost.
  • Clean-up leaves and yard debris.
