Exploration graphicTHE DRILL RIG

A drilling rig with a derrick is used to drill natural gas wells. To drill a well, the drill bit is turned by a motor that rotates the drill pipe at the surface, or in some cases by a down-hole motor that is located at the bit.

The bit is run and removed from the well by pulling drill pipe up into the derrick. A drilling medium such as mud, gas or air is used to circulate the drill cuttings out of the hole and cool the drill bit. After the drill cuttings are removed from the wellbore, they are kept in a lined pit.

After a well is drilled, and pipe run through the formation containing natural gas, a wellhead is placed at the surface. The wellhead is used to control the flow of natural gas from the well.

Colorado Springs Utilities Gas Department purchases natural gas piped to the city from natural gas fields in Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma and Wyoming. (information from Colorado Interstate Gas)

Dakota Sandstone graphicCOWBOY POETRY

Cowboy poetry tells a story in the form of a poem. The lines may rhyme or they may just create a rhythm. The stories generally relate to something the Cowboy has experienced. Many poets are Cowgirls, but the style of writing is generally known as "Cowboy" Poetry.

Have you seen an oil derrick? Think about the drilling operations. They provide important jobs to nearby communities and help bring natural gas to the cities.
