ORACLE
OF DELPHI
Centuries ago, man noticed that lightning ignited natural gas seeping from
the ground and creating a burning spring. One of the most famous eternal
gas flames was discovered by a shepherd at Delphi in ancient Greece. A
great temple was built around the flame and dedicated to Apollo.
The Greek people believed that the gods made their will known through the
Delphic Oracle. Pilgrims traveled long distances to visit this priestess
of Apollo. She sat within the temple on a sacred tripod and, falling into
a deep trance, answered all questions. Her replies were interpreted and
written down by priests.
