Learning to Write - Writing to Learn

Children write to me and say, "I'd like to be an author. What shall I do?"
I have a reply I always make and
fear they think I have some recipe that I'm too grudging to give them.
I tell them,"Read a lot and write a lot, read a lot and write a lot"

Write about what you know

For these lessons, students are challenged to read and write about natural gas. The content is introduced in each chapter and internet links are available for additional information. If teachers are using the "It's a Gas!" kits, students can be actively experimenting and exploring natural gas processes.

As students learn about natural gas, they can apply their knowledge using their imaginations and creative writing skills.

One learns to write by writing

This is not a recipe book for writing.
Instead the lessons suggest forms of writing-- for fun!

The goal is to put writing to work across the curriculum with an emphasis on what writing can do for students as learners. Science and social studies concepts can be explored and shared through writing.

A variety of writing styles are introduced so students can become familiar with writing genres. The variety also gives the students choices and the opportunity to explore writing.

The Student Rendezvous section is a place for students to communicate with each other. It also includes helpful hints on the Writer's Environment, the Artist's Tools, Getting Started and Editing Tips.
