WELCOME
TO
THE FINISHING FORTRESS
fter
our exhilarating journey through the pipelines
from the Glider's Province,
we are happy to pause at the Finishing
Fortress,
high on the Mesa
above the city of Colorado Springs.
he Finishing Fortress is one of six facilities which
are prepared
to accept raw water from the mountains
and treat it
to provide pure, safe finished water
for all the people of the city.

o ensure
adequate supplies and the future of the civilization,
the magnificent McCullough Fortress has been constructed
in the verdant foothills to the North of the city.

he
Knights of the Finishing Fortress
keep a constant vigil throughout the realm to the West,
watching the skies for changes in the weather.
They talk peculiar languages with mysterious flying objects
known as satellites. They speak of water storage
levels,
stream flow, reservoir releases. They also monitor the activities
to the East
once the precious water has left the safety of the Finishing Fortress.
These outstanding Knights shoulder the demanding responsibility
for the steady flow of water throughout the KEEPER'S kingdom.

he Wizards of the Finishing Fortress advise
the Knights
on the purity and safety of water within the kingdom.
Some Wizards roam the farthest reaches of the realm
to collect water samples. Others remain in the Fortress
surrounded by the formulas and charts.

he Stewards of the Finishing Fortress
use natural processes to cleanse and purify the raw water from
the mountains.
They first put the water in the Cauldron of Coagulation
where chemicals form particles called Floc.
Next they quietly remove the particles in the Sedimentation Tanks
as the mysterious forces of gravity pull the suspended matter
to the bottom. Finally in Filtration the water passes through
layers
of crushed coal and sand which remove all the particular particles.
Disinfection provides a chemical weapon for the
last specialized treatment of the water.
Finished water is guarded carefully throughout its stay
at the Finishing Fortress, but now it can be released to continue
its journey.
Please help the KEEPER earn the equipment
necessary to continue the journey by choosing
the correct ending to the following statement.
Melted snow from high in the mountains
