THE EL PASO CANAL

map of the El Paso Canal

MAP OF COLORADO SPRINGS IN THE EARLY 1870S.

The head gate for the El Paso Canal was located on Fountain Creek
in old Colorado City and the terminus was Evergreen Cemetery.

The sole purpose of the canal was to provide water for the irrigation ditch
which ran along the home lots that General Palmer
was selling in what is now the downtown and Colorado College area.

The canal carried water for more than 80 years (1872-1956).
Remnants of the canal are still visible in some parts of Colorado Springs.
