POND COMMUNITY

Beneath its tranquil reflections, the pond hosts an intricate web of life.
Within its waters, a self-sustaining cycle of
growth, consumption and decay occurs.

On the bottom, bacteria and algae fuel the system by decomposing and recycling plant and animal remains. Microscopic plankton flourish in the warm, enriched waters. Invertebrates, worms and aquatic insects scrape up fixed vegetation or sieve in suspended food particles. Fish and frogs consume these grazers and yield in turn to turtles, diving ducks and wading birds.

On the surface, Mallards skim off floating plants, Water Striders scurry after struggling insects and Whirligig Beetles spin, scanning with bifocal eyes for meals in or on the water.

Where the water deepens, marsh plants halt their advance. Beyond, pond waters stretch. On the glassy surface, Water Striders skate, spiders scurry, fleas hop, and Duckweeds gather. Throughout the year, Great Blue Herons stalk these waters, and Wood Ducks ornament the surrounding.

With winter, come the Pintails, Shovelers, and Teal. Diving ducks follow: the Canvas Backs, Goldeneyes and Scaup.

On the bottom, mayfly larvae and tube worms slither, and bacteria slowly decompose the leaves and animal remains that have settled there. Beneath a tranquil surface, the pond hosts an intricate web of life.
