Wastewater planning public meeting Monday

Section Separator

Oct. 2, 2009

Colorado Springs Utilities customers are invited to learn more about our community’s wastewater system and provide input on our master plan at an open house Monday, Oct. 5, 4:30 to 6 p.m at the Leon Young Service Center, 1521 Hancock Expressway.

Colorado Springs Utilities oversees one of the largest wastewater collection and treatment systems in Colorado that is regulated under a single state-issued permit.

The Wastewater Master Plan, which is reviewed annually, helps prioritize projects needed to maintain and improve Colorado Springs’ complex wastewater system. It takes into account economics, current and potential environmental regulations, population growth, new technology and aging infrastructure.

Initiatives requiring work in 2010 and the near future include:

  • Creek crossing improvements
  • Manhole evaluation and rehabilitation
  • Installation of a ultraviolet disinfection system at the Las Vegas Wastewater Treatment Plant
  • Ongoing collection system rehabilitation
  • Mandatory public infrastructure improvements

The draft plan may be viewed before the meeting.

Wastewater System Facts

  • 1,609 miles of main pipes (like driving from Colorado Springs to Buffalo, N.Y.)
  • 19 lift stations (buildings which move water from one elevation to another)
  • Two wastewater treatment plants and one biosolids plant
  • Daily average treatment capacity at both plants is 42 million gallons a day, but can handle up to 95 million gallons a day.
