Classroom presentations

As a community-owned utility, we are committed to helping our customers use services safely and wisely. One way we do this is through free classroom presentations on electric and natural gas safety, water resources and raptor protection.

Review the descriptions of the presentations below and then submit a separate request form for each of the presentations that interest you.

Energy

Electric Safety: Electric Power and You
Audience: third grade through adult

  • Our safety program uses a demonstration board to represent both overhead and underground distribution systems. The language and depth are geared toward the appropriate age groups. The demonstrator explains how the safe use of electricity can affect all aspects of our daily activities. In addition, safety materials, such as activity books, stickers and safety tips, are distributed (age appropriate). The entire presentation lasts between 25 and 45 minutes depending on the audience age. A TV, VCR (or DVD), and an eight-foot space near an electric plug are required.

Natural Gas
Audience: second through fifth grade

  • Our natural gas program can be scheduled at your location. This presentation includes a Sniffy video, a four-foot demonstration board and physical demonstration. Children learn where natural gas comes from and what to do if they smell natural gas in their home or school. Safety materials, including a natural gas odor card, activity book and stickers are distributed to the students. Depending on the number of classes involved, the presentation lasts 25 to 45 minutes. A TV, VCR (or DVD), a four-foot space for the demonstration board and a small table for the demonstration are required.

Natural Gas
Audience: adult

  • Natural gas is a naturally occurring mixture of hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon gases found in porous formations beneath the earth's surface. Schedule this presentation to learn more about natural gas properties, components, combustion, dangers and what to do if you smell natural gas or hit a natural gas line. A table is needed for the physical demonstration.

Raptor Protection

  • We offer a presentation on raptors that shows our commitment to raptor protection efforts on power lines. Our presentation covers such topics as raptor characteristics, adaptations, identification, natural history, basic biology and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. The presentation lasts approximately 30 to 35 minutes and requires a six-foot table for the bird display.

Water

Water Wonders: In-Class Water Experience
Audience: second through fifth grade
  • This classroom presentation offers an introduction to the water molecule, water cycle, weather and water conservation. Students will learn what water is made of and why it’s important. They will perform a water cycle experiment, create a cloud in a bottle and explore how much water we use and can conserve. The program includes acting out a brief play about the water cycle that demonstrates the three states of matter in which water exists, and concludes with a brief assessment and take home information.  The presentation lasts 50 minutes. Maximum class size is 40, and up to five presentations are offered per day. Please provide a table and access to water.
  • Reinforce the water cycle with printable Water Cycle diagram worksheets, courtesy of Enchanted Learning (targeted grades 2 – 5) and the USGS (targeted grades 5 – 8).
Water Wise: In-Class Water Experience
Audience: fifth through eighth grade
  • From the mountain to the tap, this classroom presentation offers an overview of the supply, collection, treatment and distribution of water in Colorado Springs. Students help build and map the Colorado Springs’ water supply from as far away as the western slope. They will explore the contents of a water filter and track where wastewater goes. Appreciation of water with ways to conserve are reinforced through activities, a self assessment and take-home information. The presentation lasts 50 minutes, with a maximum class size of 70. Up to five presentations are offered per day (in a fixed presentation space). Please provide a table, area to project slides, access to electricity and a computer projector, if available.
