Although summer typically means fun in the sun, it’s also when the demand for power increases, especially on the hottest days. With thousands of air conditioning (A/C) units operating at the same time, demand for electricity increases during the summer and strains the electric system.
You may want to consider becoming a member of our A/C conservation program, the Energy Cooling Optimization (ECO) Team, for customers with central air conditioning systems. By joining the ECO Team, you become a significant contributor to stabilizing rates, delaying the need to construct new power plants and reducing environmental impacts by allowing us to adjust your thermostat during periods of high demand. To learn how the ECO program works, see information listed below.
How do I enroll?
Call us (448-4800) to schedule the installation of your new advanced technology thermostat with a local, certified HVAC technician.
How does it work?
When it becomes necessary to conserve electricity, typically on very hot days, we will send a wireless signal to raise the temperature setting on your new thermostat by 2 to 4 degrees. This is referred to as an "event".
What takes place during an "event"?
The thermostat automatically adjusts when it receives a wireless signal from us. Approximately 25 events are declared during the average cooling season (June - August) and can occur between the hours of 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Each "event" can last 2 to 4 hours. Upon the conclusion of the "event", your thermostat will return to its original programmed temperature setting.
Eligibility Requirements:
- You must be a residential electric customer (E1R rate) or small commercial electric customer (E1C rate).
- You must own and occupy the property.
- You must have a central air conditioning system (window units, through-the-wall units, or swamp coolers do not qualify).
- Your account must be current for the past 90 days and remain current to participate.
Note: ECO Team is not recommended for customers who may have health issues affected by warm weather.
Benefits:
- Customers can control their home cooling system from any internet connected device – at home, at work, even on the road.
- Settings can be adjusted for weekdays and weekends, with up to four programmable periods a day - plus you’ll receive a one-time $25 credit on your utilities bill for participating.
- ECO Team allows CSU to manage peak demand, which can prevent power interruptions and keep costs down.
Is ECO Team right for you? Consider these questions before enrolling:
- Are there any medical issues and/or equipment that require stable temperature conditions?
- Are there other members in your household? You may want to consult with them first.
