Recreational Uses on Municipal Watershed Lands

We have engaged a citizens committee for more than two years in an in-depth process regarding potential recreational uses that may be appropriate, with a emphasis on the Pikes Peak South Slope areas. The intent of the project was to design and implement a plan for recreational use on watershed lands compatible with watershed protection.

The South Slope watershed lands consist of approximately 9,000 acres located adjacent to Pikes Peak, at elevations ranging from approximately 10,000 feet to more than 12,000 feet. Although the site is located within 10 miles of the western end of Colorado Springs on a direct line, the watershed lands are situated in a remote setting and require a drive that includes narrow sections and rough, unpaved surfaces.

The efforts of everyone involved has culminated in the creation of a final Plan for Recreational Uses on Municipal Watershed Lands.

This plan is a result of:

  • intense field research: field observations, data collection, site inventory, resource mapping
  • literature review: recreation impacts on watersheds
  • case studies: comparison to other recreation sites (Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins)
  • public involvement: stakeholder interviews and public open houses
