Tips for Appliances

- Clean your refrigerator and freezer coils once a year.
- Clean your clothes dryer lint filter after each load to help the dryer work more efficiently. Heat is not blocked and distributed more evenly when the filter has been cleaned.
- Use a drying rack or a clothesline for drying items when appropriate. A drying rack is a free way to dry clothes. It may even keep them from shrinking, something a dryer will not do.
- Replace worn gaskets on your refrigerator.
- Run full loads when washing dishes and laundry.
- Insulate hot water heaters to reduce heat loss.
- Cook with a microwave, when possible; it's cheaper and does not generate as much heat as a stove.
- Open the oven door no more than absolutely necessary when cooking or baking. Each time an oven door is opened, the oven loses about 20 percent of its heat.
- Plan meals so you'll cook and bake several items at once. Preheat as little as possible.
- Avoid unnecessary appliance use during the day and turn off lights, appliances and electronics when not in use.
- Set refrigerators and freezers at warmest setting.
- Lower the thermostat on your water heater to 120 degrees.
