Are you aware…
If just one household in 10 bought ENERGY STAR® qualified heating and cooling equipment, we would prevent annual greenhouse gas emissions of 15 billion pounds, equivalent to the emissions from 1.3 million cars.
Earning the ENERGY STAR® means products meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the US Environmental Protection Agency. ENERGY STAR® qualified furnaces have higher Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) ratings and higher efficiency blower motors, making them about 15 percent more efficient than non-qualified models. Remember, even though ENERGY STAR® products can be more expensive to purchase up front, the cost difference will be paid back over time through lower energy bills.
Furnaces are the most commonly used residential heating system in the U.S. Running most often on gas, but sometimes on oil, propane, or electricity, furnaces deliver their heat through a duct system.
You can get better performance out of your heating and cooling system by:
- Sealing ducts that run through the attic, crawlspace, unheated basement, or garage. Use duct sealant (mastic) or metal-backed (foil) tape to seal the seams and connections of ducts. After sealing the ducts in those spaces, wrap them in insulation to keep them from getting hot in the summer or cold in the winter.
- Seal any other ducts that you can access in the heated or cooled part of the house.
- Check your filter every month, especially during heavy use months (winter and summer). If the filter looks dirty, change it. At a minimum, change the filter every 3 months.
- Perform regular maintenance to prevent future problems and unwanted costs.
