Utility Boxes

You may have noticed vaults, switches, transformers and junction boxes. better known as "green utility boxes" in your neighborhood or maybe even in your own front yard. These green boxes house high voltage utility equipment. Fortunately the boxes connect our homes to electricity, allowing light when we flip the switch. Unfortunately, they can be dangerous if treated carelessly.

It's important that the boxes be free of materials and objects that prevent ventilation. They need air to keep them cool and working properly, otherwise they can become a fire hazard. Allow eight feet of space in front of the green boxes, and two feet of space on each side for landscaping. Our detailed landscaping standards will help you.To keep your loved ones and your home safe, avoid using the following to cover the boxes:

  • Storage sheds
  • Fences Trees
  • bushes and shrubs
  • Fire wood
  • Rocks

Also, beware of open boxes in your area. The boxes are locked, however, over time they can become exposed due to normal wear and tear, car hits, foul play and vandalism. If you notice that a green box is open or exposed, don't approach it. Open boxes may be energized and able to cause injury or death. Encourage your children to play away from the boxes. Due to the energy they produce, they can be hot to the touch. Some boxes may have sharp edges, and exposed bolts or screws.

Call us at 448-4800 to report open, exposed or damaged boxes.
