Although copper wire theft is nothing new, recently we have seen an increase in theft. This is a national issue which has serious safety implications and financial impacts on Springs Utilities and you, our customers.

  • Safety: Stealing copper can result in serious injury and even death to the thief, due to the electric capacity of the wire. In some cases it will cause fires and explosions.
  • Rate payer disadvantage: Copper theft could eventually drive electric rates higher due to the loss of inventory.
  • Outages: Stealing copper and other metals from an electric substation or from a utility pole can cause a major electric outage.

To lessen the impacts of copper theft, we need your help. Stealing copper or any other metal is a crime and punishable by law. If you see any unauthorized person entering an electric substation or facility, or climbing a utility pole, call the police at 444-7000. Help us spread the word about the deadly consequences that can result from trying to steal wire. The price of metal is not worth the lives of our customers.
