Drake Power Plant update: Small fire will not impact customers

​If you’ve been watching the local news since last night, you’ve likely heard about the small, isolated fire at our Martin Drake Power Planfile-12.jpegt, located just south of downtown Colorado Springs. The fire was limited internally to a single generating unit -- Drake Unit 7.

Thanks to the extensive training and experience of our plant employees, and an amazing response by the Colorado Springs Fire Department and the Colorado Springs Police Department, everyone was evacuated safely, the fire was extinguished quickly, and the structural integrity of the plant is sound. In fact, all Drake employees reported as normal today, August 21.

For our customers, there will be no impacts to your electric service due to this small fire. Drake’s second operating unit – Unit 6 – is due to come back online today after receiving planned maintenance over the last several months. Additionally, our well-rounded energy portfolio offers us sufficient resources to meet customer electric demands.

We are now conducting a thorough damage assessment of Unit 7 and investigating the cause of the fire. We expect to bring Unit 7 back online within the next few weeks.
