More public electric vehicle chargers thanks to grant

  by  Amy T.  on  9/24/2019

We recently installed four Level II electric vehicle chargers at four of our facilities thanks to funding from a Charge Ahead Colorado grant. The chargers expands the community’s electric vehicle charging network for our customers and employees.

The installation of these chargers aligns with our newly adopted Energy Vision. We are dedicated to offering sustainable solutions that support the environment and reduce its carbon footprint.

"As a community-owned utility, we are proud to support our customers and employees who are adopting this technology. EVs are an environmentally sound, cost-effective way to power vehicles," said Aram Benyamin, Colorado Springs Utilities CEO. "These chargers will also enable us to expand the use of EVs in our fleet."

1. Conservation and Environmental Center, 2855 Mesa Road, available to the public 24/7.
2.
Leon Young Service Center, 1521 Hancock Expressway, available to the public 24/7.
3.
John Pinkerton Service Center, 7710 Durant Drive, available to the public Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

"We are working to learn all that we can about this technology and the potential impact of increased electric use on our system as EV adoption continues to increase," said Benyamin, adding that we can serve as a resource for businesses interested in workplace charging.

"We recognize EVs have great potential to reduce fuel costs for our customers, improve air quality in the Pikes Peak region and improve the operations of our own fleet," explains Benyamin.

Currently, we have eight battery electric vehicles and 27 electric hybrids in our fleet, and we continue to evaluate their performance on a number of levels.

Great to see this, we're going to need thousands of these but it has to start somewhere, nice to see this beginning.

Just curious about election cars since I have not looked into them. When these vehicles are charging at a station or say Walmart who pays for the electricity at each place it is used. Is it like a parking meter?

Yay. I hope that more are planned as I have an electric car and love it.

Whomever pays - It depends on the location. The ones mentioned above are part of a pilot program and are currently free of charge thanks to a grant we received. You do, however, need to have a ChargePoint account to use them.
