Our early citizens understood the value of public power ownership, voting in 1924 to create their own municipal utility.
Today, public power is as relevant and valuable as it was nearly 100 years ago. Colorado Springs Utilities is one of nearly 2,000 community-owned utilities, together serving about 48 million people.
Oct. 6-12 is National Public Power and Natural Gas Week, which is a great time to highlight the unique advantages of community ownership. Our value goes well beyond pipes, wires and generating units. It’s in the cumulative benefits we bring our community, including:
- Lower rates
- Reliable service
- Local employment
- Economic development
- Quality customer service
- Support of local businesses
- Environmental stewardship
- Support of local government
- Community engagement and improvements
- Energy efficiency and customer safety programs
- Saving through more efficient municipal operations
Utility decisions are made here by City Council, serving as your Utilities Board. Business is conducted in the open, providing greater transparency and accountability. As a not-for-profit utility, we are here to serve you, not remote shareholders. We always keep the community’s best interests at heart.
We’re proud of our rich history and work hard to position ourselves for the future. On behalf of all our employees, it’s an honor to serve you.
