Untangling holiday lights never made anyone merry. Each year, our family tries to get a little more creative with ways to avoid our growing jumble of tangled up lights. We’ve found new and interesting battery powered decorations, projection lights, and we may have even skipped holiday lights altogether when our kids were small and our hands were always full.
This year, instead, I’m planning to exchange all our old, incandescent lights for new LED light strands. Here’s why – Colorado Springs Utilities is offering to give electric customers a discount on new LED holiday lights in exchange for old strands. Your old lights get recycled and the proceeds benefit Project COPE, the only local organization that dedicates its entire funding to utilities payment assistance year-round. Last year we collected 4,308 pounds of old holiday lights, raising $5,000 for Project COPE.
So mark your calendars! From now until Dec. 23, bring in up to three light strands to our Conservation and Environmental Center (CEC). For each strand, you’ll get a coupon for $5 off LED holiday lights at local ACE Hardware stores. If you can’t make it to the CEC, stop by ACE Hardware during a scheduled exchange event to turn in your old lights. View the list of exchange locations and dates here.
The energy experts at the CEC will tell you that LED holiday lights use up to 90 percent less energy, last 10 times longer and are safer than traditional ones. So while I tackle the decorations this year to make our home look merry and bright, I’ll feel happy knowing that I am being more efficient, saving money, and contributing to a great cause through Project COPE.
Have a safe and joyous holiday season!
