L3Harris Technologies, a global aerospace and defense innovator with offices in Colorado Springs, is among a growing number of companies seeking to make their operations even greener.
Pepe Alicea, senior facilities manager, was exploring solar energy last year when he heard about our new Green Power program. The program helps customers offset their electric use with clean, renewable energy.
This option allowed him to meet company sustainability goals without having to install solar panels.
L3Harris Technologies was among the first to sign up for the program’s growing waitlist in the weeks before it officially became available to customers on Jan. 1.
“This helps our goal of reducing our carbon footprint. We want to not only participate, but be a leading force in this area,” he said.
With six sites in Colorado Springs, L3Harris’ mission is to provide advanced defense and commercial technologies across “air, land, sea, space and cyber.” They are also seeking to accomplish this in ways that protect and sustain the environment.
According to Jason Bamberg, Manager, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), “employees volunteer on Green Teams, a grassroots company effort to brainstorm and explore projects to reduce waste, pollution and save energy and water. The idea to investigate alternatives for our site to reduce greenhouse gases and our carbon footprint was initiated by the Green Teams.”
The company has also worked closely with our water and energy conservation experts to make their buildings more efficient.
“Those two-way conversations help to explain what is possible. Any time we must upgrade, we make sure it’s greener,” Alicea said.
They’ve updated indoor water fixtures, upgraded irrigation technology and changed the landscape to be more water wise.
“It’s an ongoing effort because our natural resources are limited,” Alicea said.
The Green Power program is available to all our customers. Residential customers can subscribe in 10% increments, beginning at 30% up to 100%. Business customers can subscribe in 10% increments up to 100%.
