The Kilowatcher rate option may be a good choice if your business has the ability to curtail electric use with a 24 hour notice. To take advantage of this rate option, your business must have had a daily use of 1,000 kWh or more during the past 12 billing periods.
Customers on the Kilowatcher rate option pay a lower price for electricity throughout the year during on-peak hours compared to our standard rate option except for when a Super Peak period is declared. During a Super Peak period, we encourage customers to reduce their use or pay a price that is substantially higher than the on-peak price. The number of hours that can be declared a Super Peak is limited to 100 hours over the course of 12 months.
A Super Peak period can only be called during normal on-peak hours. Normal on-peak hours are Monday through Friday, excluding legally-observed holidays. Specific hours are:
- Summer (April to September): 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
- Winter (October to March): 4 p.m. to 10 p.m.
Off-peak hours are all other times as well as the following holidays: New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
Typically a Super Peak period is declared when energy demand is high or supply is low. It is unlikely that one variable alone will cause an event to be declared – it is usually a combination of variables occurring at the same time.
- Increase in demand
- Cloud cover (or lack thereof)
- Humidity levels
- Day and time of week
- Process load being brought on
- Decrease/Shortage in supply
- Production capacity
- Failure or repairs at power plant
- High market prices
- Availability of electricity on open market
- Availability of transmission
The deadline for new customers to enroll in the upcoming contract period is March 1. The contract period begins April 1.
