AI technology enhances regional wildfire protection

We are always looking for innovative ways to protect the vital services you depend on. That is why we are excited to announce a major upgrade to our wildfire defense strategy: AI-powered early detection.

Recently, a state-of-the-art Pano AI station was launched at Stanley Canyon, located west of the U.S. Air Force Academy. This high-tech digital lookout uses advanced cameras and machine learning to scan the area for smoke 24 hours a day, 360 degrees at a time.

This technology is a part of our Wildfire Mitigation Plan, a comprehensive, year-round strategy designed to reduce fire risks and protect our infrastructure and watersheds. While our teams work on the ground to manage vegetation and harden our electrical system, this AI-powered station provides the bird’s-eye view needed to catch potential threats early.

Why this matters to you

Wildfires move fast, and every second counts. This new system helps our local fire agencies respond more quickly than ever before. By spotting smoke the moment it appears, we can:

  • Protect your power and water. The station keeps a constant watch over the critical pipelines and electrical equipment that serve your home and local water treatment plants.
  • Safeguard our water supply. Early detection helps prevent the long-term damage and water contamination that often follow a wildfire.
  • Share critical information with local and regional partners. This real-time data is shared directly with the Colorado Springs Fire Department, the U.S. Forest Service, and numerous other regional and statewide first responder agencies.

Innovation at no extra cost

We understand that these safety settings may temporarily affect our service, and you could experience a power outage. However, this is a critical action to protect our community. The advanced technology allows us to quickly return the recloser settings to normal as soon as weather conditions improve, ensuring we can provide the reliable service you depend on.

This intelligent, adaptive system is a significant step forward in our efforts to build a more resilient and responsive electrical grid for our entire community. To learn more, we encourage you to review the full Wildfire Mitigation Plan.

Looking ahead

Stanley Canyon is just the beginning. We are already evaluating more locations for future AI stations to expand this safety net across our region. We’re committed to using the best technology available to keep our community safe and your services reliable.
