We offer a variety of classroom presentations on water, energy and safety topics. Expand the sections below to view descriptions of each presentation and request a presentation.
Raptor adaptations & protections (1st - 5th grade)
With the aid of taxidermy birds of prey, learn about raptors' unique adaptations and senses along with Colorado Springs Utilities efforts to protect raptors on power lines.
This engaging presentation offers students the opportunity to touch a raptor's wings and talons.
The interactive program lasts 45 minutes and is suitable for groups of 15 to 45 students in grades 1 through 5. A six-foot table for the bird display is required. The Raptor Protection Program has limited availability and is scheduled first -come, first-served.
The science of safety (3rd - 5th grade)
The Science of Safety program supports Science standards for electricity, natural gas and energy while emphasizing the 3rd through 6th grade Comprehensive Health standard to apply personal safety knowledge and skills to prevent unintentional injury.
Our experienced professionals use hands-on experiments and activities to illustrate how the safe use of electricity and natural gas can affect all aspects of our daily activities. We teach about forms & sources of energy, electrical circuits, and injury prevention.
We also discuss the origins of natural gas from fossils, the natural gas system and how it is used in our homes today. The presentation has an emphasis on the three S’s of natural gas safety: sight, smell and sound; as well as actions to take if students detect natural gas in their home or school.
The presentation is 50 minutes with a minimum class size of 15 and maximum of 60. Multiple presentation sessions are available. The demonstration requires a table near an electrical outlet and a way to project slides.
Water wonders (2nd - 3rd grade)
This 50-minute presentation involves students in active demonstrations while they learn about freshwater on earth, water cycle processes, cloud formation and water conservation.
Water watchers (4th - 5th grade)
Students review percentages of water on earth, how the water cycles by playing the Incredible Journey Water Cycle dice game and learn how humans impact water quality with the Stormwater Soup activity.
This 55-minute presentation includes a visual journey of how Colorado Springs Utilities transports our water supply from the Rocky Mountains 100 miles away.
Water wise (6th - 8th grade)
This presentation will explain the water cycle, our local water supply system, water and wastewater treatment processes and water conservation.
The program includes an interactive pipeline challenge and videos of live microbes. The presentation lasts 50 minutes, with a maximum class size of 60.

Energy Smart (6th - 8th grade)
We explain how Colorado Springs Utilities generates electricity and how energy is used. Students use watt meters to determine the energy demand of common household items and conduct an “Energy Planner for a Day” activity to illustrate the environmental, economic and logistical challenges of energy delivery to the community. The presentation ends with a discussion on best ways students can be part of a sustainable energy future.
