High Use Sports Fields (HUSF) are high-water turfgrass areas that have regularly scheduled sporting events. These playing fields typically require more watering during the playing season to protect player health and safety. Such areas are exempt from the three-day-per-week Water-wise Rule.
After successfully completing the application form below, an HUSF can receive an exemption to the three days/week rule. Applying for this exemption will prevent your account from receiving a violation letter for watering more than three days/week. The application includes best management practices implemented at your site which supports the efficient use of water. It is important to follow these best management practices to use water wisely while caring for HUSFs.
Eligibility requirements
- The HUSF must be a playing field where sporting events take place on a regular basis. (Neighborhood parks and practice fields do not qualify.)
- The field may be available for use by the public, clubs, schools or professional sports teams.
- The site must have an automated, in-ground irrigation system in good operation.
- The site must demonstrate good water management strategies associated to the type of playing field.
- Areas that are not essential to the field are not granted exemption and must follow the three days/week Water-wise Rule.
Exemption process
- Read all eligibility requirements and terms and conditions.
- Complete the High Use Sports Field Designation Request Form.
- If approved, post a HUSF sign (available at the Conservation & Environmental Center) near the sports field area to inform others of the designation.
