It is grown mainly for the color of the branches, which have great appeal in the winter landscape due to their bright red color. The leaves are medium to dark green in the summer.

The flowers of redtwig dogwood are not extremely ornamental, but are held in clusters and are dull white in color. White berries appear in late summer and are attractive to the birds.
