The Southern Delivery System (SDS) is a regional water delivery system that provides a cost-effective, environmentally-responsible and dependable way to transport Arkansas River water stored in Pueblo Reservoir to Colorado Springs, Security, Fountain and Pueblo West.
SDS will help us meet the needs of our customers for decades to come. It also helps to ensure economic viability to attract and retain businesses in our thriving community.
SDS is being constructed in phases. Phase 1, which began commercial operation on April 28, 2016, included:
- Pueblo Dam connection
- 50 miles of pipeline from Pueblo to Colorado Springs
- Three raw water pump stations
- Edward W. Bailey Water Treatment Plant
Construction for Phase 2 will be determined at a future date, when demand for water increases and more capacity is needed. Phase 2 will include two reservoirs, expanded raw water delivery capacity, and expansion of the water treatment plant and pump stations. The reservoirs will allow us to better manage the source of supply closer to the community. They will also provide storage, which is especially important during times of drought. Ultimately, the reservoirs could create recreational opportunities for customers.
