Midway to Kelker Transmission Line

We are upgrading our transmission line to strengthen our electric grid and ensure reliability as energy needs change.

Map of an orange line representing the new transmission line running from the Midway Substation, south of Fountain along I-25, connecting the Nixon substation, Fountain substation, Bradley substation and Kelker Substation on South Academy in Colorado Springs. The Midway to Kelker Transmission project upgrades the existing line to increase the amount of electricity that can be delivered to our system. It will also replace wooden poles in wildfire-prone areas with steel poles, improving our infrastructure to help reduce outages during extreme weather events.

Key benefits

The project also supports the needs of our community and positions our electric system to handle future growth.

  • These lines increase the amount of electricity that can be delivered into our system.
  • Upgrades key infrastructure at the Nixon, Fountain, Bradley and Kelker substations to improve system performance.
  • Supports regional energy coordination by strengthening a major corridor that better connects our electric system to broader transmission networks.

Project timeline

  • 2025: Project is permitted and design finalized. Equipment is purchased.
  • January – April 2026: Construction begins between Fountain and Bradley Substations.
  • May – December 2026: Upgrades continue along the existing corridor, including installation of new steel structures. Substation improvements also begin.
  • 2027: Kelker Substation Expansion targeted for completion.
  • Late 2027: Major construction activities targeted for completion.

Important construction notice

Fountain Creek Regional Trail is temporarily closed between Stratmoor Valley Park and Brandley Drive.

We explored various detour route options, but there is no safe or feasible alternative route around the closure. The area is constrained by:

  • Conservation easements that limit disturbance to protected habitat.
  • Fountain Creek, which creates natural barrier.
  • The railway, which cannot be crossed safely.
  • I-25, which has no pedestrian access.

Because of these combined constraints, there is a very limited area for our crews to work on replacing the transmission line. Closing the trail during construction is our only safe option.

The trail will be restored to substantially similar conditions and will reopen in late spring or early summer 2026.
