We provide safe and reliable natural gas service to more than 200,000 customers in Colorado Springs, and maintain approximately 2,780 miles of gas main piping and 3,068 miles of gas service piping.
Natural gas is safe when it stays within the pipelines. However, a gas leak can have serious and sometimes deadly consequences. That’s why the system is heavily regulated and monitored by the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA).
Pipeline replacement
From now through 2035, we will accelerate the replacement of our aging bare steel and uncoated steel pipelines with newer, safer materials as part of the Distribution Integrity Management Program. The DIMP program is a regulatory requirement of PHMSA.
Bare steel and uncoated steel are susceptible to corrosion, also known as rust, which can pose safety issues. We are required to complete this replacement of bare steel lines by 2035. This means we'll be replacing about 39 miles of main and service pipe each year.
Project benefits
This work improves the safety and reliability of the natural gas delivery to your home or business by allowing us to repair system weaknesses before problems can occur. Upgrading aging infrastructure can also reduce the frequency of unexpected outages.
During construction, customers may experience impacts in their neighborhoods or to their businesses. To safely replace pipeline segments or service lines, gas crews may also need to temporarily shut off a customer’s natural gas supply. We’ll be informing customers in advance of work in their area.
