As we prepare to decommission our final coal power plant and begin work on the Williams Creek Generating Station, we have contracted with Rockies Express Pipeline (REX), LLC, a subsidiary of Tallgrass, to transport natural gas on a new pipeline they are constructing to serve our system.
The 160-mile pipeline will provide fuel for the 10 natural gas generators at the Williams Creek site. It will also connect to the Horizon Utility Campus gate station and to the Front Range Power Plant at Clear Spring Ranch.
Resilient and reliable natural gas
We currently have a single transportation and pipeline system that supplies our natural gas. This project provides another pathway for natural gas delivery, giving the system a reliable backup so we aren’t reliant on one pipeline.
This project also includes access to on-demand natural gas storage, 24/7. This allows us to store more gas when prices are low, for use when market prices are higher.
As a community, we will continue to rely on natural gas as a source of baseload electric generation over the next 20 years. This is also true across the country, as natural gas remains a primary source of electric power generation.
Proposed project timeline
Early 2027: Final ruling expected from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on the project.
Spring-Summer 2027: REX to begin construction.
Spring-Summer 2028: Target date for the pipeline to be in service.
