The safe, reliable delivery of your utilities is our top priority. One way we stay on top of our aging infrastructure is by proactively rehabilitating it before we have system failures.
In the 1960s, we began installing underground cables in our electric system. These cables were only expected to last around 30 years. Now, we “rejuvenate” these cables, that are typically 40 or 50 years old, so they can last another 30 years.
This rejuvenation process involves injecting a silicone-like fluid into the cable that renews the insulation layer, keeping the current-carrying conductor from making contact with ground and causing a failure. Cable injection extends the life of our underground electric cables, reduces outages and improves reliability of the underground system.
Injecting cable to rejuvenate it, rather than replacing it, saves our customers more than $1 million per year.
We are working with our specialty contractor, Novinium/Southwire, to improve our electric system using the cable injection process. Work begins in mid-May and continues through the fall.
