Natural Gas Expansion Project

Two workers wearing safety gear carry a yellow PVC natural gas pipeline near an open trench in a street.Natural gas fuels nearly half of the power generated in Colorado Springs. Maintaining and expanding our natural gas system is essential to meet the needs of our growing community.

The Natural Gas Expansion Project will:

  • Provide a reliable gas supply to existing and future natural gas generators in our electric system.
  • Ensure the generators will run safely during extreme winter weather.
  • Upgrade existing 8, 10, and 12-inch pipe with a new 20-inch steel pipeline to serve the southern half of Colorado Springs.

This project will support the natural gas units located at the South Plant (formerly Martin Drake Power Plant) site, the future natural gas generators at the Horizon Utility Campus and improve resiliency to Fort Carson.

Horizon campus improvements

Improvements at the Horizon Utility Campus include:

Installation of an air blending station

An air blending station mixes natural gas with air before it goes into pipes that carry it to homes and businesses.

Construction of two new gate stations

Gate stations are where natural gas arrives from our supplier. We clean, check and adjust it before sending it to customers through our pipelines.

Additional pipeline upgrades and expansion

We are also planning improvements to other parts of our system.

Five new/rebuilt district regulators

District regulators are machines that lower the pressure of natural gas from the gate station so it can flow safely through our pipelines to homes and businesses.

Ten miles of 20-inch pipeline

Twenty-inch pipes are larger, which increase capacity to meet growing demand and support Fort Carson.

Project map and timeline

The expansion will stretch from the city's far east side, at the site of the new Horizon Utility Campus, to the southwest side of Colorado Springs by Pikes Peak State College.

Construction is expected to begin in 2027 and be completed by 2028-2029.

Map of the Natural Gas Expansion Project. The existing pipeline is illustrated as a yellow line that begins near B Street and South Academy. It runs east, crossing I-25 and ending at Grinnell Road. The new line is illustrated in white and runs from Grinnell to a natural gas gate east of the airport.
