Williams Creek Generating Station

400 megawatts of natural gas-based generation

A graphic rendering of four natural gas generators next to a geodesic dome. The generators feature short exhaust stacks next to industrial grade machinery. The Williams Creek Generating Station will include 400 megawatts (MW) of natural gas-based generation similar to the generators on the former Martin Drake Power Plant site.

The technology is highly efficient because they turn on rapidly to meet our peak demand, typically experienced in summer. They also produce lower emissions than other options.

Originally planned for the Horizon Utility Campus, the new generators will be located at our Williams Creek site once they are constructed.

The 160-acre site is near Lower Williams Creek, southeast of Fountain in unincorporated El Paso County. The area is east of Williams Creek Road and south of Squirrel Creek Road, and is on property already owned by Colorado Springs Utilities.

These additional generation sources are needed to reduce carbon emissions, meet state regulations and to meet the evolving power needs of existing and future customers.
