Water Pressure Zone Project

A map displaying the order in which areas will have their pressure reducing valves checked. The map shows 7 phases of the assessments starting clockwise from Mesa Road across much of the Kissing Camels neighborhood. We will begin work in fall 2025 to improve water pressure on the west side of the city near Garden of the Gods Park.

This project will increase water pressure to customers and fire hydrants. It will also prepare our water system for future upgrades.

To view the areas that will be impacted by phase 1 of this project, please view the project map.

Phase 1: Assessing and installing pressure reducing valves

During this phase, we will assess pressure reducing valves in about 600 homes or commercial buildings and replace them if needed.

What are pressure reducing valves and why are you checking them?

Pressure reducing valves, also known as PRVs, help regulate the water pressure entering your home or business, preventing damage to your plumbing system and appliances by maintaining a safe and consistent water flow. They are typically located on your service line, usually near the water meter.

We are testing these valves because customers in this area may experience an increase of 40 pounds per square inch in water pressure. Without a functioning pressure reducing valve, the increase in water pressure could damage your plumbing system.

What is the process to evaluate my pressure reducing valve?

A carefully selected Colorado Springs Utilities’ contractor will assess your pressure reducing valve. Customers are to sign a Permission to Enter form that will allow the contractor to access your valve, which may be located on your property.

If the contractor determines that a new pressure reducing valve is needed, they will replace it during the assessment or arrange to install a new one at a later date. Colorado Springs Utilities will cover the expense for installing new valves.

If you do not wish to have your valve assessed, you are required to sign a Denial of Permission to Enter form. There are risks and potential negative impacts to your home if there is not a functioning and efficient valve installed.

Phase 2: Construction of new water main and pressure reducing valve vaults

A map showing areas of construction during phase two of the water pressure valve project. Labels on the map point at locations where work will take place, including between Mesa Road and Hill Circle, along Hill Circle, along Greenside Place, and along Almagre Heights.

Construction includes:

  • Approximately 200 feet of 8-inch water main
  • Removal of two existing valve vaults along Hill Circle and Reserve Point
  • Construction of two new underground pressure reducing valve vaults to expand the pressure zone.
    • The exact location of the vaults is not finalized, but one vault will likely be on Greenside Point and the other on Almagre Heights.
