Colorado Springs Utilities is working to make our Web site accessible
to our diverse community. As a community-owned utility, we want to ensure
all of our customers can access and use the information presented on our
Web site. If you experience difficulties with our Web site and/or have
any suggestions, please contact
us at 719-448-4800. Below are just a few of the features that are a product
of the web accessibility initiative:
Access keys. Certain links on this site are associated with access keys
to allow users to move to the main pages by keyboard. Here are instructions:
-
PC = [Alt] key + the access key character, [Enter] key
-
Mac = [Control] key + the access key character, [Enter] key

Adjustable font sizes. The fonts on Colorado Springs Utilities'
Web site are relative to the font size setting in your browser, which means
you can adjust the size of the font to best suit your viewing needs. If
you would like to increase or decrease your text size, most browsers have
the adjustment setting on the top toolbar under "View" entitled "Text Size"
or "Increase/Decrease Font Size."
Improved navigation. We are now in a frameless environment unlike
our previous Web site that used frames which can disrupt navigation in
braille displays and screen readers and makes it difficult to bookmark
certain pages. Our java script drop-down menus let you choose access to
certain pages in just one-click from our home page. To speed up the download
time, you can disable scripting [2] in your browser and still navigate
through our site without the menus.
Image descriptions and translations. By providing text equivalent
features for our images, we hope that all users will get the full benefit
of our site and information. We have provided data tables for any images
that portray important information.
Better page organization. With a consistent page structure generated
by our Web content management system and the use of cascading style sheets,
our Web pages are better organized. This will help braille readers and
speech synthesizers to access the data more clearly.
Linked Internet sites. As it is our goal to provide customers with the
best possible information, we do have links throughout our site to other Internet
sites that we feel may be of interest or provide helpful information to customers.
We do not assume responsibility for the accessibility of Internet sites linked to
from our site. If you experience accessibility problems with a linked site,
please contact that site directly.
According to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), approximately 10 percent
of the population in most countries have disabilities, including visual,
auditory, physical, speech, cognitive and neurological, that can affect
an individual's access to the Web [2]. By following the Web Accessibility
Guidelines 1.0 by W3C, Colorado Springs Utilities wants to ensure that
we are providing quality information and complete access to all our customers.
